In an exclusive interview with XDA Developers, Nothing’s Software Creative Director Mladen M. Hoyss disclosed that the company intends to “start from scratch” with Nothing OS 2.0. Minimalism and dot matrix fonts will play a significant role in the design of the Phone (2)’s Nothing OS 2.0, which is anticipated to ship with the device.
Carl Pei announced Nothing’s strategic partnership with Blloc in March 2023 and enlisted Hoyss and his design team to create the next iteration of Nothing OS. Hoyss has previously worked on the development of the Blloc Zero 18 Android phone and the Ratio interface. The fundamental principle underlying Blloc’s design was “productivity coupled with minimalism.”
Teenage Engineering, a Swedish consumer electronics company that has advanced hardware-based design, co-founded Nothing, as you may recall. The same has crept into the design language of Nothing Phone (1). And this will be reflected in the introduction of the Nothing Phone (2).
Hoyss intends to apply the same idea to Nothing as well. He believes that Nothing OS 2.0 will achieve a harmonic synergy between the hardware and software design concepts that comprise the brand’s primary identity. Nothing OS 2.0 will use dot matrix typography in a simple UI to provide productivity and granular customization for the Phone (2). He also reveals that the forthcoming Nothing OS skin would be “kind of on the same page” as the Ratio launcher.
Nothing OS 2.0 will heavily emphasize the design of the main interface. It will prioritize information that is specific to you, putting your preferences and needs first. Hoyss continues, “Pre-installed options on your smartphone will be emphasized.” With the forthcoming operating system, Nothing aims to make no false promises and deliver functional aesthetics to Phone (2) users.

The Nothing Phone (2) is scheduled to launch next month and may come preloaded with the brand-new operating system. Nothing OS’s Evolution
No effort is made to integrate intentionality into their computing devices and operating system. They want consumers to have a productive and enjoyable experience with their devices. The objective is to establish a Nothing ecosystem that is compatible with the hardware, utilizing the finest features of Android and making them more accessible and user-friendly.
Nothing’s experience with operating systems has been fascinating. With Nothing OS 1.0, a small team and external contractors created an operating system that closely mirrored standard Android but added a few unique features.
Following the introduction of Phone (1), the team expanded to approximately 100 employees, culminating in the creation of Nothing OS 1.5 with additional features and enhancements. Hoyss has now revealed that Nothing is entering a new phase with its own Android-based system known as “Nothing OS.”
