Playtonic hints at Nintendo Switch 2 release for Yooka-Replaylee with its latest trailer

Playtonic’s classic 3D platformer Yooka-Laylee is getting a fresh makeover in the form of Yooka-Replaylee, and it looks like it’s headed to the anticipated Nintendo Switch 2! The developer stirred up excitement on X (formerly Twitter) with a new trailer, captioned with “As well as PC, Yooka-Replaylee WILL be on PS5, Xbox Series and… Nintendo,” followed by a pair of playful eye emojis—strongly hinting at the new Nintendo console. The trailer even ends with a pair of cartoon eyes appearing over the Nintendo logo, adding to the fun tease.

The game already has dedicated store pages for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, where fans can wishlist the game and check out the updates. Oddly, though, no Nintendo Switch page exists yet, hinting that Yooka-Replaylee may be skipping the original Switch in favor of the new console. Playtonic might simply be waiting for Nintendo’s official announcement on the hardware to confirm details.

For those unfamiliar, Yooka-Replaylee revisits Yooka-Laylee, Playtonic’s original title from 2017. Developed by ex-Rare developers, the game aimed to recapture the magic of Banjo-Kazooie and was crowdfunded through a successful Kickstarter campaign. Unfortunately, the original release had mixed reviews, with some players finding its levels a bit flat. A 2019 side-scrolling sequel, Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair, took inspiration from Donkey Kong Country and was received much better, earning critical praise.

With Yooka-Replaylee, Playtonic is aiming to reimagine the original game with enhanced graphics, smoother performance, higher resolution, a new world map, fresh challenges, and a host of quality-of-life improvements. Fans are hoping that these upgrades will finally deliver the platforming experience Playtonic set out to create.
