South Korean master-director Park Chan-wook has collaborated with Lionsgate Television to develop an English-language television adaption of his 2003 masterpiece “Oldboy”.

Park, renowned for globally acclaimed films like “Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance,” “Thirst,” “The Handmaiden,” and “Decision to Leave,” co-wrote and directed the original movie based on the same-titled Japanese manga.

The story of the movie, which starred Choi Min-sik, Yoo Ji-tae, Kang Hye-jung and Oh Dal-su, was about a guy who was kidnapped and kept as a prisoner for 15 years in a locked hotel room.

He is suddenly freed with no explanation, only finds out that he has only five days to find out who his kidnapper is or face the consequences.

Park will co-produce the new series with his producing partner, Syd Lim. According to Variety, Lionsgate Television’s Coutney Mock and Tara Joshi will oversee the project.

“Lionsgate Television shares my creative vision for bringing ‘Oldboy’ into the world of television,” said Park. He added, “I look forward to working with a studio whose brand stands for bold, original and risk-taking storytelling.”

The director most recently helmed the HBO mini-series “The Sympathiser,” which starred Robert Downey Jr. and Hoa Xuande. The series is based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of the same title.
