Strands is the New York Times’ latest word puzzle, offering a more challenging twist on the classic word search. If you’re looking to put your word-finding skills to the test, this game will keep you on your toes!
How to Play Strands
In Strands, the objective is to find hidden “theme words” in a grid of letters. To play, you tap or drag letters to form words, and once you’ve crafted the correct word, double-tap the final letter to confirm. Correct words will be highlighted in blue and will no longer be available for selection.
But here’s the catch—even if you don’t find the theme words right away, finding non-theme words still helps! For every three non-theme words (four letters or more), the game reveals some letters from one of the theme words, giving you a hint to unscramble. Every letter in the puzzle is used only once, so there’s no overlap, and you’ll use every letter to complete the puzzle.
Additionally, each puzzle contains a special “spangram” — a word that represents the puzzle’s theme and stretches across two opposite sides of the grid. This word will be highlighted in yellow once found and can help you crack the overall theme.
