How to Play NYT Strands

In Strands, the goal is to find the “theme words” hidden in a grid of letters. You can manipulate the letters by dragging or tapping to form words, confirming them by double-tapping the final letter. When you find a theme word, it will be highlighted in blue, and you can’t select those letters again.

For every three non-theme words that are at least four letters long, you earn a hint revealing the letters of one of the theme words, which you’ll need to unscramble. There’s also one “spangram” in each puzzle that describes the theme, highlighted in yellow, and it connects two opposite sides of the grid.
