After years of waiting, Google Calendar users finally have access to an official dark mode on the web! This new optional color scheme not only adds a sleek, darker look but also comes with a minor redesign for a more polished experience.
Announcing the update in a Google Workspace blog post, Google explained that users can now easily switch between light, dark, and default themes. Dark mode isn’t just a visual change—it can help save battery life, especially on OLED screens where darker pixels consume less power.
If you’re eager to try it out, the update is rolling out now, and you can check if it’s available to you. Just go to the settings cog in the top right, select ‘Appearance’ from the drop-down menu, and pick ‘Dark’ for an eye-friendly, refined look. Google has also made subtle tweaks to the typography and controls, aligning them with its Material Design 3 guidelines, making the app feel cleaner and more accessible.
One small caveat: some Chrome extensions may not be fully compatible with these changes. Google hinted that a few extensions, especially those designed to enhance Google Calendar like G-Calize for color coding or Timely, may not function as expected. If you run into issues, Google recommends reaching out to the extension developers. Other custom themes from the Chrome Web Store could also encounter minor hiccups.
The official dark mode option is finally here, making Google Calendar easier on the eyes and helping extend laptop battery life—two wins for users!
