Following Apple’s announcement that Apple Intelligence will officially launch with iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, and macOS Sequoia 15.1 next week, the company has now opened up a developer beta for the next set of exciting features. The iOS 18.2 developer beta, available from October 23, 2024, introduces several high-profile tools for Apple Intelligence: Genmoji, Image Playground, Visual Intelligence, and ChatGPT integration for Siri.
These developer betas (iOS 18.2, iPadOS 18.2, and macOS Sequoia 15.2) are now accessible to registered developers in the Apple Beta Software Program. However, as these are early versions, some bugs and performance issues are expected.
In addition to major feature updates, Apple Intelligence now supports more English dialects, including Australian, Canadian, New Zealand, South African, and UK varieties. At the forefront of these new capabilities is Genmoji, a generative AI emoji tool for creating custom emojis by blending existing ones, accessible in Messages, Notes, and Freeform apps. Image Playground, Apple’s standalone AI image generator app for iPhone, iPad, and Mac, is also making its debut. Both Genmoji and Image Playground will be available to third-party apps via developer APIs, enabling more creative uses.
With the addition of ChatGPT integration, Siri now has AI-powered support for complex questions. This feature is entirely opt-in, so users can decide when to activate it. Siri’s conversational abilities have also improved, so it can respond even if you stumble on words, and it now has access to Apple’s how-to guides to offer more detailed help.
Visual Intelligence, a feature for iPhone 16 users, pairs with Camera Control to enable searches based on photos you take, such as identifying restaurant hours from a picture of the building or determining dog breeds from a snapshot. Also enhanced is Writing Tools, which can now write in specific tones for more customized text generation.
While Apple’s updates in iOS 18.2, iPadOS 18.2, and macOS Sequoia 15.2 look promising, keep in mind that the beta phase may include significant bugs, so it’s best to avoid installing it on primary devices.
