The next Destiny game will be a free-to-play mobile shooter

NetEase Games has just revealed Destiny: Rising, a new free-to-play sci-fi shooter set within the Destiny universe, which will soon be available on mobile devices. The game is heading into its first closed alpha test this November.

Destiny: Rising takes the franchise in a fresh direction, offering an alternate version of the Destiny universe. The storyline unfolds at the end of the Dark Age—a previously unexplored era in the franchise. Humanity is just starting to recover from the devastation of an alien invasion that nearly wiped them out. Players will step into the shoes of a new generation of Lightbearers, the familiar heroes from Destiny and Destiny 2, alongside their trusty Ghost companions.

Gameplay will feature both first-person and third-person perspectives, with support for controllers in addition to standard touchscreen controls. Players can choose from a variety of unique characters, each with distinct abilities, personalities, and backgrounds. Long-time Destiny fans will recognize some familiar faces, while others will be completely new to the universe.

The game won’t just be about single-player missions. Destiny: Rising will offer a mix of competitive and cooperative game modes, some carried over from other Destiny titles and others brand-new, designed to bring fresh gameplay experiences to the Destiny world.

Officially licensed by Bungie, Destiny: Rising is a collaboration between Bungie and NetEase. Ethan Wang, senior vice president at NetEase, expressed his excitement about the partnership, saying, “We’re honored to bring a Destiny-level experience to mobile gamers,” adding that the franchise’s massive fanbase has been a huge inspiration for the project.

Bungie’s creative lead, Terry Redfield, also chimed in, noting that the Destiny universe has been crafted over more than a decade and that the team is thrilled to allow mobile gamers to dive into this new take on the story.

The closed alpha test for Destiny: Rising is set to start on November 1. Interested players can sign up for early access on the game’s official website.
