Barry Keoghan, known for his roles in The Banshees of Inisherin and Saltburn, recently opened up about his guarded approach to personal life, especially in relation to his son and his relationship with singer Sabrina Carpenter. While Keoghan generally keeps his private life out of the spotlight, he addressed criticism about his fatherhood during a conversation on The Louis Theroux Podcast for Spotify.

Keoghan, who became a father in 2022 with a son from a previous relationship, shared how online criticism has impacted him. He explained that some people unfairly label him as an “absent father” without understanding his circumstances. “People use my son as ammunition,” he said, adding that the more attention he receives, the less he posts about his child to protect his privacy.

He also expressed frustration at the harsh judgments directed at him online, saying, “People draw a narrative and go ‘absent father, deadbeat dad,’ and more disgusting things I wouldn’t even repeat.” Theroux encouraged him not to engage with negative comments, reminding Keoghan that such criticism often comes from people who don’t know him personally.

Keoghan revealed he stays off social media while preparing for roles, but admits he sometimes checks comments. To protect himself, he has blocked certain words, such as references to his son, explaining, “I’m just trying to make a living, create a good body of work, and ensure security for my child.”

Professionally, Keoghan is set to star in Andrea Arnold’s upcoming film Bird and will appear in the Peaky Blinders movie. The Louis Theroux Podcast episode featuring Keoghan is now available on Spotify.
