‘The Ossan Newbie Adventurer’ season 1 ending explained

Anime with an overpowered main character who’s unaware of their own strength are pretty common these days, especially in the adventure genre. But The Ossan Newbie Adventurer, Trained to Death by the Most Powerful Party, Became Invincible (let’s call it The Ossan Newbie Adventurer for short) brings something new to the table, despite following the familiar formula of a powerful protagonist.

In most shonen anime, the main character is usually a young, optimistic teenager, driven by a desire to become the greatest Pirate King, Soul Reaper, Hokage, or whatever title they’re chasing. The Ossan Newbie Adventurer sticks with that adventure setup, but with a twist — Rick, the protagonist, didn’t start chasing his dream until he turned 30. Now, 32 and having trained for two years with an elite squad of adventurers, he’s seen as “over the hill” in his world where most adventurers begin as teens. Luckily for Rick, his intense training has made him more than capable of keeping up with the younger crowd.

What happened in the season 1 finale of The Ossan Newbie Adventurer?

The first part of season 1 revolves around Rick’s journey to pass the promotion exam and officially become an adventurer. But the second half raises the stakes as the Orichalcum Fist (Rick’s team) hunts down the Six Jewels needed to defeat the evil Kaiser Alsapiet. One of their key missions is to win a jewel by competing in the King of Fists Elimination Tournament. By the finale, both Rick and his teammate Broughston make it to the final round. Since the jewel is guaranteed regardless of who wins, Rick considers withdrawing from the fight. However, Broughston insists on battling Rick seriously, as an equal. This throws Rick into a bit of a mental dilemma, but his teammates remind him that Broughston trained him for this very moment.

The showdown between Rick and Broughston turns into one of the series’ most heartfelt moments. We get a deep dive into Broughston’s past, revealing that he always felt out of place among the other orcs because of his intelligence. After meeting a legendary adventurer who had once been part of the mythical Yamato’s party, Broughston co-founded Orichalcum Fist to find people who could truly match him. Even though he formed strong friendships, he still yearned for a real, equal fight, especially with someone as strong as Rick.

The two exchange intense blows in their final fight, and Rick impressively holds his own until he’s on the verge of collapsing. That’s when his hidden ability, Reckless Soul, kicks in. It activates whenever Rick pushes beyond his limits to fight someone stronger than himself. In the end, the battle ends in a tie, but the real victory comes from the bond between them. Broughston realizes that thanks to Rick and the others, he’s no longer alone.

After the battle, Rick wakes up bandaged up, with his teammates by his side. Not only do they secure the champion belt, but they also find the golden jewel hidden inside. Both Rick and Broughston decline the championship title, opting to send the belt back to the former champion (with a replica jewel inside for keepsake). Broughston briefly talks about the mysterious traveler he met in his past (hinting at a possible future plotline) and reflects on how his dream of finding an equal was finally fulfilled.

Meanwhile, Angelica, another party member, temporarily leaves the group but promises to return after training with Broughston to surpass Rick. The season ends with the Orichalcum Fist heading home, gearing up for their next adventure.
