The Menendez brothers, a painful horror sequel, and future anime royalty have their Netflix crown stolen by a mind-numbingly mediocre reboot

It’s 1987, and Arnold Schwarzenegger is redefining the action hero genre yet again, trading in his broadsword and leather for camo and firepower as Major Alan “Dutch” Schaefer in Predator. Facing off against the extraterrestrial Yautja, this sci-fi thriller pushed boundaries and set a high bar for action-sci-fi crossovers. Over the next 17 years, the Yautja have remained a cinematic fascination with entries from Predator 2 to the gritty reboot Prey. Now, one of the franchise’s more polarizing entries, The Predator (2018), is topping Netflix’s charts worldwide.

Directed by Shane Black, The Predator follows sniper Quinn McKenna (Boyd Holbrook), who stumbles upon a Yautja during a mission. Government forces, led by Will Traeger (Sterling K. Brown), aim to weaponize the creature, but Quinn knows better and assembles a ragtag crew to stop the alien threat. It’s a more humorous take on the franchise, blending action with a populist tone but is seen as a lighter, less intense take than previous films.

While The Predator leads, Netflix’s true-crime doc The Menendez Brothers ranks third globally, trailing Ryan Murphy’s Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story. And rounding out the top five is the new anime Dan Da Dan: First Encounter, which has captivated international audiences on Netflix with its outlandish mix of high school antics, aliens, and supernatural chaos.

From Schwarzenegger’s jungle fight in Predator to the franchise’s current streaming successes, the Yautja have left an indelible mark on pop culture. Meanwhile, the top rankings reflect today’s audience tastes, from gritty true-crime stories to genre-bending anime adventures.
