After a 1-1 draw and a missed penalty attempt by Roma’s Roger Ibanez and Gianluca Mancini, Gonzalo Montiel, who had scored the winning penalty for Argentina in the World Cup final against France, repeated the goal for the Spanish team.

The Spanish club has now won all 7 of the competition’s championship games, with captain Jesus Navas involved in their 1st victory over Middlesbrough in 2006.

Despite not finishing in the top 4 in the most recent La Liga season, they managed to earn a spot in the Champions League for the following year.

There will be a sense that things might have been quite different for Roma and manager Jose Mourinho, who had led the team to their first-ever Europa Conference League victory last season. Mourinho had previously won all 5 of his last European finals.

Roma, who had only won in one of their previous 4 European shootouts, were uncomfortable from the spot after pulling out a couple of potential shooters, including captain Lorenzo Pellegrini, Dybala and Abraham.

However, Sevilla handled all 4 of their attempts with a sense of calmness and determination.
