Samsung Expands Sleep Apnea Detection Technology to Galaxy Ring Following Regulatory Approvals
Samsung Electronics has unveiled an enhanced Sleep Apnea feature now available for both Galaxy Watch and Galaxy Ring, following recent regulatory approvals. The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) granted clearance in July, followed by an endorsement from Korea’s Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS), positioning Samsung as a pioneer in integrating sleep apnea risk detection into a smart ring.
Enhanced Sleep Monitoring Capabilities
The updated Sleep Apnea feature, accessible via the Samsung Health Monitor app, offers significant advancements over its previous iteration. The refined algorithm provides in-depth analysis of a user’s vital signs during sleep, delivering comprehensive insights into breathing disruptions. This advancement extends beyond initial risk assessments, facilitating more informed discussions with healthcare professionals.
Introduction of Sleep Apnea Detection in Smart Rings
Samsung’s introduction of sleep apnea risk detection in a smart ring format marks a first for the industry. The Galaxy Ring’s ergonomic and lightweight design ensures user comfort and encourages consistent nightly wear, crucial for effective sleep measurement. The feature requires minimal data, offering valuable insights from just two nights of monitoring over a ten-day period, thereby fitting seamlessly into diverse lifestyles.
Regulatory Milestones and Global Expansion
Previously, Samsung’s original Sleep Apnea feature received the pioneering U.S. FDA De Novo authorization in February 2024, a first for wearable devices in detecting moderate to severe sleep apnea signs. Building on this foundation, the feature’s recent MFDS approval further validates its clinical reliability. Samsung intends to broaden the feature’s availability globally, promoting early detection of potential sleep apnea signs and proactive sleep health management, underscoring the company’s commitment to preventive healthcare.
“Samsung has consistently aimed to integrate sleep health effortlessly into daily life,” stated Jongmin Choi, Head of Health R&D Group, Mobile eXperience (MX) Business, Samsung Electronics. “The MFDS approval, coupled with the world’s first smart ring support, emphasizes our dedication to accessible innovation. We are empowering individuals with the tools to recognize potential early sleep apnea signs and manage their well-being proactively.”
Product Specifications and User Guidance
The Sleep Apnea feature operates as an over-the-counter (OTC) software-only mobile medical application compatible with select Samsung Galaxy Wearables and Phones. It targets moderate to severe sleep apnea detection by identifying significant breathing disruptions in users aged 18 and older after two nights of monitoring within a ten-day window. It is designed for on-demand use and not as a substitute for professional diagnosis and treatment by healthcare providers. Initially available on Galaxy Watch 9 running Wear OS 7.0 or higher, support will extend to Galaxy Watch 7/8 in subsequent software updates.
