Priscilla is a 2023 American biographical drama film written, directed, and produced by Sofia Coppola, based on Priscilla Presley’s (who serves as an executive producer) and Sandra Harmon’s 1985 biography Elvis and Me. It chronicles Presley’s (Cailee Spaeny’s) life and her connection with Elvis Presley (Jacob Elordi).
Priscilla Presley’s biography Elvis and Me, which describes their courtship and early years together, served as the inspiration for Coppola’s film Priscilla. Over the course of her remarkable career, Coppola has explored contentious personalities, unconventional relationships, and storylines that are not merely centered upon female protagonists but also genuinely feminine in their style and philosophy. The Academy Award-nominated filmmaker, who has made movies like The Virgin Suicides, Lost in Translation, and Marie Antoinette, is perhaps the ideal choice to adapt the Elvis and Priscilla narrative for the big screen. The story of Priscilla Presley’s meeting Elvis, her marriage to him, and the events that ultimately led to their breakup and divorce serves as the basis for the film Priscilla. The book was adapted by Larry Peerce into the same-titled Made For TV film. Even though Priscilla was just fourteen when she met Elvis, pop culture treats their romance as a contemporary fairy tale, and their intense love for one another is an often recounted story. According to Coppola, the film would mostly center on Priscilla Presley, with Elvis practically serving as a supporting character and having very little of a role in the movie.
