‘One Tree Hill’ star lost her freedom to a cult as its leader’s son itched to ban her only escape

Bethany Joy Lenz, known for her role as Haley James Scott on One Tree Hill, recently opened up about her past experiences with the Big House Family cult during an appearance on the Call Her Daddy podcast. She shared how her decade-long involvement with the cult intersected with her acting career, particularly the emotional escape she found in portraying her character’s relationship with Nathan Scott, played by James Lafferty.

Lenz discussed the solace she experienced while filming, noting that her time on set provided a necessary reprieve from her life in the cult. “Oh, for sure,” she affirmed when asked if acting served as escapism. She clarified that her comfort came from the role itself rather than any romantic feelings for Lafferty, describing their relationship as purely platonic and likening him to a “brotherly figure” who never crossed personal boundaries.

Despite the professional camaraderie, Lenz revealed that her marriage to QB, the son of the cult leader, created complications. QB disapproved of her acting career, feeling threatened by her proximity to other men and ultimately wanting her to quit to avoid romantic scenes. Lenz recounted that QB had financial control over her earnings from the show, which she initially didn’t recognize due to the cult’s “spiritual authority” system. This system dictated that men had the final say in decisions, leaving women with little power to question them.

Reflecting on her marriage, Lenz shared that she had merged her finances with QB without fully realizing the implications, saying, “I just did the dutiful Christian wife thing and merged my accounts.” She highlighted how this dynamic contributed to her feeling of being taken advantage of.

Lenz has previously noted that working on One Tree Hill played a significant role in her decision to leave the cult in 2012, particularly because the filming schedule necessitated time away from the group. She acknowledged the support she received from her co-stars, who were aware of her situation and often tried to help her. The encouragement she received, even when she felt “a little bit weird,” was pivotal in her journey toward freedom, especially after the birth of her daughter.
