Morgan Spurlock, Oscar-nominated documentarian, dead at 53

Morgan Spurlock, the director and star of the 2004 documentary Super Size Me, died at the age of 53. Spurlock’s family confirmed on Friday, May 24, that he passed away on Thursday, May 23. He died of cancer-related complications.

In a statement, Morgan’s brother Craig Spurlock said, “It was a sad day, as we said goodbye to my brother Morgan. Morgan gave so much through his art, ideas, and generosity. The world has lost a true creative genius and a special man. I am so proud to have worked together with him.”

Spurlock is survived by his two sons, Laken and Kallen; mother Phyllis Spurlock; father Ben (Iris); brothers Craig (Carolyn) and Barry (Buffy); many nieces and nephews; and ex-wives Alexandra Jamieson and Sara Bernstein, all of whom are the mothers of his children.

Super Size Me received an Oscar nomination for Best Documentary Feature. He challenges himself to eat at McDonald’s for an entire month while exploring the fast food industry for the documentary.
