Meryl Streep believes the shampoo scene with co-star Robert Redford in her classic movie Out of Africa (1985) counts as a ‘ sex scene’ owing to its intimacy. At the 77th Cannes Film Festival, the star admitted that she didn’t want it to end.

In an on-stage conversation on May 15, 2024, at the Cannes Film Festival, the 74-year-old actor discussed the popular scene from Out of Africa when Robert shampoos her hair.

“It’s a sex scene in a way, because it’s so intimate. We’ve seen so many scenes of people fucking, but we don’t see that loving touch, that care,” the actress stated.

Meryl continued, saying it wasn’t pleasant filming the scene. The actress disclosed that the producers had advised her and Robert, who is now 87, to be cautious around potentially dangerous wild animals nearby.

“The animal that kills the most men in Africa is the hippopotamus, especially when you come between them and the river,” the actress added.

Also, there was a “hippopotamus right above it” as they were filming in the river. Meryl stated that the warning made Robert nervous since he couldn’t wash her hair correctly, stating “It was not good”.

She also said that her longtime hair and makeup artist, Roy Hellund, took Robert aside and assisted him by providing a few tips. That’s when his game really improved.
