Marvel Studios is still determined to make the MCU sequel we thought was cursed never to happen

Marvel is treating fans to a spooky season this year with new episodes of Agatha All Along dropping weekly. However, it’s bittersweet since what began as a promising yearly tradition with the MCU’s first Halloween special, Werewolf By Night, has yet to be followed up since its 2022 debut. This special marked a significant foray into the horror genre for the franchise, but Marvel’s attempts to expand into this territory have faced challenges.

The anticipated Blade reboot starring Mahershala Ali has been stalled, and there have been no further developments from the Werewolf by Night universe. Michael Giacchino, the special’s director, remains hopeful, assuring fans that a sequel is in the works, though it is currently on hold due to industry recalibrations. He mentioned, “There’s been a lot going on in the industry, and everyone sort of recalibrating… We’ll get there.”

Giacchino, known primarily for his work as a composer on films like Doctor Strange and the upcoming The Fantastic Four: First Steps, has indicated that while Werewolf by Night may be paused, it hasn’t been forgotten. The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has undergone a significant creative overhaul recently, impacting various projects, including Daredevil: Born Again and Ironheart. The reception to standalone specials, including Werewolf by Night and The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, may not have met Disney’s expectations, leading to a reevaluation of their approach.

Despite these setbacks, Marvel has a history of revisiting ideas, as seen with the return of Tim Blake Nelson’s character, the Leader, in 2025’s Captain America: Brave New World. Fans are eager to see characters like Gael García Bernal’s Jack Russell, Laura Donnelly’s Elsa Bloodstone, and Man-Thing (affectionately known as “Ted”) back in action soon.

One potential avenue for reviving Werewolf by Night could be an Adventure into Fear series, inspired by the classic Marvel horror anthology comic. This concept could follow Jack Russell and his companions as they encounter various Marvel monsters and supernatural entities. Given the success of Agatha All Along and the ongoing interest in darker narratives like Blade, there’s clearly a demand for more horror within the MCU. Marvel, it’s time to embrace that darkness!
