Jerry Jones radio interview rant, explained: Here’s what you need to know!

The Dallas Cowboys had a rough time in Week 6 of the 2024 NFL season, suffering a staggering 38-point defeat against the Detroit Lions. This loss was one of the most significant home defeats in the team’s history.

Despite the loss, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones continues his weekly radio appearances on 105.3 The Fan, a popular local station in Dallas. Although you might expect him to be frustrated after such a disappointing game, Jones was particularly fiery during his Tuesday morning segment.

The radio hosts, Shan Shariff and RJ Choppy, asked him some reasonable questions, especially regarding the Cowboys’ 3-3 start to the season and the team’s offseason decisions—or lack thereof. They pointed out that Jones hadn’t brought in many new players, particularly at the running back position, where he replaced Tony Pollard with an aging Ezekiel Elliott instead of pursuing top free agent Derrick Henry, whom he previously claimed the team couldn’t afford.

When pressed about the team’s poor performance and his lack of offseason moves, Jones responded with irritation:

“You really think you can sit there and tell me everything I’ve done wrong without mentioning the right things? I’m sorry for what happened on Sunday. It makes me sick. But it’s not your job to list my mistakes. If you think you know better, you should join me at the NFL meeting with the other 31 team owners; you’d be a genius!”

It’s worth noting that 105.3 The Fan isn’t owned by Jones; it’s a separate entity. This means his comment about finding a different show to ask questions doesn’t really hold much weight. If he did switch to a different station, it might come across as him avoiding tough questions, which could harm his credibility.

As for the radio hosts, they’ve been on air together since 2011, hosting the morning segment from 5:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. CT. After the interview, they expressed surprise at Jones’ tone, especially when he implied he was paying them for their questions.

When asked by a reporter about his outburst, Jones downplayed it, saying, “I wouldn’t call it yelling. But if I’m going to be grilled, I’d rather it not be by the guys I’m paying. I can handle criticism from fans or others, but I expect better from the media. If it had been actual football experts or real fans asking, I might have given a different answer.”

The hosts, taken aback by his reaction, took to social media to address his insinuation about payment.

As for whether Jones, who is 82, plans to step down anytime soon, there’s no indication that he will. He has ensured that the Cowboys remain a family business, so it’s likely his son, Stephen, would take over when he does decide to retire instead of selling the team to someone outside the family.

Heading into their Week 7 bye, the Cowboys’ record stands at 3-3. They’ve had some notable wins against the Browns, Giants, and Steelers but also suffered a close loss to the Ravens and two embarrassing defeats at home against the Saints and the Lions. After the bye week, they’ll hit the road to face the 49ers, looking to turn things around.
