Inside Prince Harry, Meghan Markle’s plans to make the holiday ‘extra special’ as they face personal separation
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are reportedly preparing for what they fear could be their last Christmas together in the United States, amidst growing uncertainty about their future in America. After relocating to Montecito, California in 2020, the couple, along with their children Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, has spent their holidays in the U.S. The uncertainty stems from potential deportation threats under Donald Trump’s presidency, with the couple fearing that they may be forced to leave the country if Trump follows through on his re-election promises.
A source close to the couple shared with Closer magazine that Harry and Meghan are determined to make this Christmas extra special for their children, as they may not have another holiday season in the U.S. if the legal situation worsens. Meghan’s mother, Doria Ragland, is expected to join them for the festivities at their Montecito home, though they will not be spending Christmas in the U.K. The couple has not received an invitation to the royal family’s annual Christmas gathering at Sandringham, and they reportedly did not expect one, given the strained relationship with Harry’s family.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s Christmas traditions have shifted over the years. After spending the 2019 holiday in Canada, they have celebrated in the U.S. since 2020. While they could have traveled to the U.K. to spend time with Princess Diana’s family, the Spencers, they chose not to. Additionally, Harry remains embroiled in a legal battle over his security arrangements in the U.K., further complicating their potential return.
In case they need to leave the U.S., there are reports that Harry and Meghan have purchased a secondary home in Portugal, but it is not yet ready for occupancy. Meghan may also face a difficult decision about whether to relocate there, as her work and commitments are in the U.S. In any case, the couple’s focus for this Christmas is on spending time together, making it a memorable occasion for their family as they navigate this uncertain chapter.
