Google partners with Voltus to create extensive virtual power plant
Google has teamed up with Voltus to significantly expand their collaboration by developing a 1-gigawatt virtual power plant within the PJM grid area. This grid caters to 67 million individuals across 13 states as well as Washington, D.C.
Voltus specializes in gathering flexible energy capacity from local businesses and residences, which includes devices such as smart thermostats, energy storage batteries, and industrial resources. These are then integrated into a virtual power plant, financed by Google. During times of high energy demand, these resources momentarily decrease their energy consumption to aid in maintaining grid stability. In exchange, the customers who participate benefit economically, receiving reduced utility bills and monetary compensation.
Earlier in the year, a 100-megawatt agreement was established, and this current expansion increases that capacity tenfold. This marks one of the largest distributed capacity portfolios ever implemented by a major technology company.
The initiative highlights Google’s dedication to enhancing the capacity of local energy grids while also improving reliability and keeping costs manageable for the region.
