Edgar Wright in Talks to Direct ‘Barbarella’ Starring Sydney Sweeney; Report

The upcoming Barbarella film, which will star Sydney Sweeney, has finally received an update. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Edgar Wright is in talks to helm the movie for Sony Pictures. Barbarella was first played by Academy Award-winning actor Jane Fonda in a 1968 film version.

According to the report, the search for a director has focused on Edgar Wright, the renowned filmmaker of films such as Last Night in Soho, Baby Driver, and Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. Additionally, Jane Goldman and Honey Ross are being considered to write the movie’s script.

In 2022, it was first announced that Sydney will also serve as executive producer for the new Barbarella. Jean-Claude Forest created the character in 1962 for a French Graphic magazine. She is a mercenary who goes on several missions around the universe. The role was portrayed by Jane Fonda in a 1968 adaption.

In a recent interview with British GQ, Sydney mentioned Barbarella and talked about the box office disaster of Madame Webb. Sydney also mentioned that she signs every project for several reasons. The actress said, “To me that film was a building block, it’s what allowed me to build a relationship with Sony. Without doing Madame Web I wouldn’t have a relationship with the decision-makers over there. Everything in my career I do not just for that story, but strategic business decisions. Because I did that, I was able to sell Anyone But You. I was able to get Barbarella.”
