The Inhumans TV series, which aired in 2017, is widely regarded as one of the worst entries in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). With a disastrous 11% on Rotten Tomatoes, the eight-episode show was supposed to expand the MCU by introducing the Inhuman Royal Family. However, it became a critical and fan flop, with issues ranging from poor writing to lackluster special effects, leading Marvel to quickly distance itself from the project. The show’s failure left it mostly forgotten, with few ever expecting the Inhumans to return in any meaningful way.
However, during a recent appearance at D23 Brazil, Marvel president Kevin Feige dropped a tantalizing hint that the Inhumans might not be completely gone from the MCU. He teased that the characters could make a comeback, mentioning that Anson Mount, who portrayed Black Bolt in Inhumans, had already returned as a variant of his character in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Feige’s comment, “We’ll see where, if, and when, they return,” left the door open for a possible revival of the Inhumans, though it was unclear when or how that would happen.
Despite this, there’s little logical reason for Marvel to resurrect the Inhumans in a major way. The 2010s push for the Inhumans was largely due to Marvel not having access to the X-Men, which were tied up with Fox. Now that the X-Men are being integrated into the MCU, focusing on the Inhumans again may feel redundant. Still, Marvel has a history of revisiting ideas, and Feige’s comments suggest that while the Inhumans’ story is unlikely to take center stage, Marvel may not be completely done with them yet.
In particular, Anson Mount’s portrayal of Black Bolt was widely considered the highlight of the series, and his return in Doctor Strange suggests that Marvel may be willing to give the character another shot. But if the Inhumans do return, it’s likely that Marvel will be very careful to avoid the mistakes of the past, keeping the focus on making them a meaningful part of the MCU rather than another misstep. Here’s hoping that if Black Bolt comes back, they let him keep his mouth shut this time.
