Demi Moore’s The Substance Receives 13-Minute Standing Ovation At Cannes 2024

Demi Moore’s latest horror thriller, The Substance, made a spectacular premiere at the Cannes Film Festival on May 19, 2024. The film, which was helmed by Coralie Fargeat, a French director, received an impressive 13-minute standing ovation, the longest at the festival so far.

The movie, which also features Dennis Quaid and Margaret Qualley, is a unique mix of body transformation and horror with a feminist twist.

It recounts the story of The Substance, a new substance that claims to transform individuals into the best versions of themselves. However, this transformation comes with a catch: users must share their time equally between their original and transformed selves, which might lead to unexpected problems.

The premiere amazed the audience despite starting 20 minutes late, and the credits rolled at around 1 in the morning. Fargeat, Moore and Qualley were delighted at the response. Moore, genuinely affected, blew kisses to the audience and repeatedly thanked them. Fargeat also expressed gratitude, notably to Cannes Festival director Thierry Fremaux.

Moore considers the film to be an important point in her career because it is her first Cannes premiere. She described the experience as an “incredible ride” in her brief comments following the screening.
