Daniel Craig in talks to join James Gunn’s DCU as a character you’ve probably never heard of

Despite the explosion of superhero films over the past decade, Daniel Craig—known for his iconic role as James Bond—has remained absent from the comic book world. However, it seems Craig is now eyeing a new role in the DC Universe (DCU). Under the leadership of James Gunn and Peter Safran, DC Studios is in the midst of building its next phase, which will introduce new characters while bringing back some familiar faces. And it appears that Craig might be among those new faces.

The actor is reportedly in talks to play the titular character in a Sgt. Rock movie, a project still in its very early stages. Sgt. Rock is a lesser-known DC Comics character, and Craig’s involvement is not yet confirmed, as no deals have been finalized. However, the script, written by Justin Kuritzkes (who worked with Craig on the A24 film Queer), has reportedly impressed DC Studios.

For those unfamiliar with Sgt. Rock, the character is a no-nonsense army general who led his elite unit, Easy Company, during World War II. The character first appeared in Our Army at War in 1959. Unlike many other comic book heroes, Sgt. Rock doesn’t possess superhuman abilities but instead relies on his immense durability and proficiency with weapons to survive and succeed. This military hero is known for his toughness and leadership rather than any supernatural powers, making him a more grounded character compared to the usual comic book fare.

While the project is still in its infancy and details are scarce, Craig’s involvement could mark a unique shift in his career, particularly after wrapping up his run as James Bond in 2021’s No Time to Die. Craig seems to have room for another big franchise role, and with Gunn and Safran at the helm of DC Studios, this could be an ideal time for Sgt. Rock to be brought to life on the big screen.

This isn’t the first time a Sgt. Rock film has been discussed—rumors in the past pointed to actors like Bruce Willis or Arnold Schwarzenegger playing the role, but those plans never came to fruition. With Craig now potentially on board, fans of the character and DC enthusiasts alike will be hoping this project finally sees the light of day.

If you’re wondering what’s next for Craig, his upcoming project is the Knives Out threequel, Wake Up Dead Man, slated to hit Netflix in 2025. It looks like, after taking on Bond, Craig may be preparing for another iconic role—this time in the superhero genre.
