Chris Cornell’s daughter Toni Cornell slams TMZ over Liam Payne death scene photos
Toni Cornell, the daughter of late Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell, recently expressed her outrage over TMZ’s insensitive reporting on Liam Payne’s tragic death. Following the news of the former One Direction member’s fall from a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires, TMZ published graphic photos of his body, sparking widespread criticism for their callousness.
In a heartfelt message on her Instagram Stories, Toni shared her distress, recalling how she had experienced similar trauma when TMZ published images related to her father’s death back in 2017. She described those moments as “indescribably traumatizing,” especially at such a young age. Toni emphasized the need for media outlets to show respect for the privacy of individuals and their families during times of grief, stating, “It is still shocking to me that the privacy of human beings and their families fails to be respected… choosing sensationalism over basic human decency.”
Despite backlash and a subsequent removal of the photos, TMZ’s response, which included an explanation from executive producer Michael Babcock, failed to appease many. Babcock claimed the photos were intended to confirm Payne’s identity but did not offer an apology, leading fans to argue that it was inappropriate for the outlet to publish such images in the first place.
Toni also expressed concern for Payne’s young son, Bear, highlighting the potential pain he might feel if he were to come across those graphic images in the future. She noted that the damage from TMZ’s actions had already been done, stressing the importance of protecting the dignity of those who have passed away.
Cheryl Cole, Payne’s ex-partner and the mother of Bear, echoed Toni’s sentiments in her own tribute, urging the media to show respect and allow Payne to rest in peace. Both women called for a more compassionate approach to reporting on tragedies, emphasizing the human impact behind the headlines.
