Cannes Film Festival 2024: Meryl Streep honoured with Palme d’Or during opening ceremony
The Cannes Film Festival officially began on Tuesday night, with celebrities walking the red carpet into the beautiful Grand Theatre Lumiere to honour Hollywood actress Meryl Streep before sitting down to watch this year’s opening movie, The Second Act.
The cast of the French comedy, which included Lea Seydoux and Vincent Lindon, was joined by actor Jane Fonda, model Heidi Klum, Messi, the dog star of 2023’s Palme d’Or winner Anatomy Of a Fall, and this year’s jury, led by Greta Gerwig.
Prior to the event, French singer Zaho de Sagazan performed David Bowie’s Modern Love in the theatre aisles to honour Gerwig’s black-and-white dancing scene in “Frances Ha.”
Gerwig sang along and seemed touched by the performance as de Sagazan came on stage to kiss her hand. When Streep approached the stage in a simple white gown and black-frame glasses, the audience gave her a minutes-long ovation. She was welcomed by French actress Juliette Binoche in a red dress.
“You changed the way we look at women in the cinema world,” stated Binoche, who got emotional during her speech. “And yet you are not self-serious, like me.” “It’s like looking out the window of a bullet train,” she stated of the montage featuring all of her movies.
“My mother, who was usually right about everything, said to me ‘Meryl, darling, you’ll see. It all goes so fast. So fast.’ And it has. Except for my speech,” Streep added.
