The Grammy Award-winning artists Nelly and Ashanti have some wonderful news to share! On Wednesday, April 17, Ashanti announced that she and her partner are expecting their first child together in a heartwarming Instagram video.
In a recent Instagram video, Ashanti’s mother, Tina Douglas, joked with her about how much time she needed to prepare for a performance. Ashanti’s humorous response, “Uh, I’m gonna need about nine months,” surprised her mother.
In a conversation with Essence, Ashanti disclosed not only her pregnancy but also her engagement to Nelly. She said “This new year of my life is such a blessing full of love, hope, and anticipation,” Ashanti added, “Motherhood is something that I have looked forward to, and sharing this with my family, fiancé, and loyal fans, who have been so supportive of my career, is an amazing experience.”
Speculation of the couple’s pregnancy first surfaced in December when they attended the 11th Black and White Ball at the Four Seasons Hotel. At one point on stage, Ashanti placed her hands on her stomach, leading Nelly to do the same. Their shared smiles and laughing hinted at the happy secret.
In September 2023, Nelly affirmed their reconciliation and relationship status. In the interview with Boss Moves With Rasheeda, he stated, “It wasn’t anything that we planned. We both were pretty much doing what we do, but sometimes, being separate, you understand one another more. You could be like, ‘Well yo, let me exactly see maybe what they see.’ We all can be defensive sometimes in our own relationships. We know we wrong but we going to stand on it, you know what I mean? But we all a victim to that.”
