Alec Baldwin request to drop Rust manslaughter case denied

The Hollywood star Alec Baldwin is expected to face a trial in July on manslaughter charges related to the accidental shooting death of the cameraman in his 2021 film “Rust.”

Santa Fe Judge Mary Sommer turned down Baldwin’s request to dismiss the case on Friday. The court highlighted that the prosecutors and grand jury were not biased against the actor.

The order read, “The court does not find prosecutorial bad faith.”

Baldwin is charged with carelessly pulling a gun out of its holster at a scene when he was told not to do so. He has also been accused of ignoring the safety precautions for gun use on sets.

Prosecutors said that Baldwin endangered himself and others by missing the safety training of firearms and hiring an inexperienced armorer.

Baldwin will face an 18-month jail sentence if the court rules in favour of the prosecution.

Alec Baldwin accidentally shot Halyna Hutchins, 42, during a rehearsal on the set of his Western film in Mexico. The director, Joel Souza, was also hurt in that incident.

Baldwin has said that the trigger was not pulled by him. Additionally, he claimed that since he was unaware that the gun was loaded with real ammo and since real ammunition is not permitted on set, he cannot be held accountable for Hutchins’ demise.
