A beloved Netflix series that changed the game will definitely end after its next season, and I need to go away now
Just when we thought we had finally stopped sobbing after binge-watching Season 3 of Heartstopper, we received an update about Season 4 that has us reaching for the tissues all over again. Since its debut on Netflix in 2022, this coming-of-age romance has managed to charm viewers, balancing wholesome moments with the ability to leave fans emotionally wrecked.
A Heartbreaking Update on Season 4
Now, it seems we might have a new reason to cry: if Heartstopper returns, it looks like Season 4 could be its last. The third season, which just premiered this October, left many fans curious about the future of Charlie Spring (played by Joe Locke), Nick Nelson (Kit Connor), and their friends. Unfortunately, it appears that the end might be near for the Truham gang.
Alice Oseman, the creator of Heartstopper and the writer of the original graphic novels, recently shared a heart-wrenching update during an episode of the I’ve Never Said This Before podcast. When host Tommy DiDario asked about the possibility of a Season 4, Oseman cautiously responded, “Fingers crossed. We haven’t got any solid news as of yet. Obviously, we’d love to. I really, really just want to tell the end of the story on TV and bring all those characters and their stories to a close.”
The End of the Line?
This news shouldn’t come as a complete shock to fans, especially since Heartstopper is quickly approaching its conclusion. The show has already adapted a significant amount of its source material, with five volumes of the graphic novels available and a sixth on the way. Since Season 3 covered volumes four and five, it seems likely that the TV series will wrap up alongside the final book, leaving us with no new Heartstopper content to look forward to.
As Tao might quip in his Scottish accent, “Rude!”
Hope for Spinoffs
On a brighter note, Oseman has penned various other works set in the same universe, focusing on different characters. This opens the door for potential spinoffs, even though the main series has already touched on some of those stories. For instance, Tori and Michael’s arc in Season 3 comes from the novel Solitaire.
Regardless of how it all unfolds, we should feel grateful for the gift that is Heartstopper. This series has transformed LGBTQ-driven storytelling, shining a light on important narratives while introducing a new generation of stars. Just look at Joe Locke stepping into the Marvel universe in Agatha All Along and Kit Connor gracing the Broadway stage in Romeo & Juliet.
So, Netflix, it’s time to step up! Announce Season 4 and let this beloved show wrap up on a high note, giving fans the closure they deserve.
