Carla Gugino to portray Vivien Leigh in biopic “The Florist”
Carla Gugino has been cast in the upcoming biopic “The Florist” as Hollywood screen legend Vivien Leigh. The two-time Oscar winner Leigh is most known for her role as Scarlett O’Hara, who stars alongside Clark Gable in the iconic Hollywood film “Gone With the Wind” from 1939. Leigh also portrayed Blanche DuBois alongside Marlon Brando in the 1951 film “A Streetcar Named Desire.”
Nick Sandow, best known for his performance in the 2013 drama series Orange Is The New Black, will helm “The Florist,” according to entertainment news outlet Variety.
The film will explore Leigh’s struggle with bipolar disorder in the 1960s, as she sets to lead the Broadway production of John Gielgud’s Chekhov adaption of “Ivanov”.
Gugino, who gained fame for her roles in “The Unborn,” “Spy Kids,” and “Gerald’s Game,” stated she was excited to portray Leigh on screen. I couldn’t be more excited about the opportunity to excavate a woman as complex, contradictory, and compelling as Vivien. From the moment I read the script, I knew ‘The Florist’ was a journey I had to pursue,” the actress said.
The official synopsis reads, “Leigh collides with Joseph Penn – a WWII veteran and blue-collar florist who encounters Leigh on a delivery. At the same time, the star attends a local psychiatric facility for electroconvulsive therapy. Amidst the backdrop of madness, Leigh and Penn become each other’s sources of truth, beauty, and love.”
