Margot Robbie to produce Live-Action Monopoly movie following Barbie success
LuckyChap, the production company of Margot Robbie, has begun work on its newest project, a live-action adaptation of the Monopoly world with an economic theme. Robbie’s partners Tom Ackerley and Josey McNamara, along with Hasbro Entertainment, are also onboard the producers’ train.
Lionsgate has trust in Robbie’s team to succeed because of their hit movie, which made Barbie dolls popular again quickly. I, Tonya and Promising Young Woman are only two of the films that Margot’s production company has previously backed. They’re also attached to the Sundance movie My Old Ass, which is now owned by Amazon MGM Studios and Universal Pictures’ upcoming Christmas feature Naughty.
Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chairman Adam Fogelson revealed the new Monopoly film at CinemaCon 2024 in Las Vegas, noting that Robbie’s firm has a “clear point of view” on the matter. Although story specifics are unknown, Fogelson was thrilled to have the production crew aboard for the supposed “next blockbuster,” as he branded it.
LuckyChap also got into some lighthearted banter, saying, “Monopoly is a top property — pun fully intended.”
That film is being handled by the main LuckyChap trio, as well as Vertigo Entertainment’s Roy Lee. All cast details for both projects have yet to be confirmed. Regarding crew engagement, The Sims film has already boarded a director. Kate Herron, who directed the Loki series, will be directing this live-action project. She is co-writing it with Briony Redman.
