Kat Dennings to star with Tim Allen in ABC comedy pilot ‘Shifting Gears’

Kat Dennings (“2 Broke Girls,” “Thor”) is starring with Tim Allen on ABC’s “Shifting Gears” as Riley. The comedic pilot got approval in March, with Allen cast as Matt. Riley is Matt’s daughter, “who butted heads with her father growing up and left to marry the boyfriend he hated,” as per her character description. It characterises her as newly divorced and “forced to move back home with two kids, hoping she and her dad can make it work this time.”

Dennings recently played the lead in two seasons of “Dollface” on Hulu and ABC, and she has appeared in Marvel projects such as “WandaVision” and the “Thor” trilogy. Dennings also appeared in the CBS show “2 Broke Girls,” created by Whitney Cummings and Michael Patrick King, as well as the hit independent movies “Charlie Bartlett” and “Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist.”

The new project’s logline reads: “Matt (Tim Allen) is the stubborn, widowed owner of a classic car restoration shop. When Matt’s estranged daughter and her teenage kids move into his house, the real restoration begins.”

The pilot is Allen’s most recent collaboration with ABC since “Last Man Standing,” which aired for 6 seasons before being picked up by Fox for three more. ABC’s first pilot order of the season, “Shifting Gears,” is a strategic move to focus on developing projects year-round.
