9-1-1′s Oliver Stark blasts critics of Buck’s bisexuality

If there’s one thing all fan communities in all content categories have in common, it’s the haters who announce their departure after parting ways with their original object of affection. 9-1-1 actor Oliver Stark’s official bisexual revelation in the series’s 100th episode was a nostalgic reference to many previous characters who remained stuck in their heteronormative personality box despite hints otherwise. Here’s to Dean Winchester (Jensen Ackles) from Supernatural.

The American first responder drama series featuring Stark as Evan Buckley premiered in 2018, but its “long time coming” surprise kiss, which explores the main character’s bisexuality, wasn’t delivered until 2024. 9-1-1 Season 7 Episode 4, which broadcast on April 4, officially confirmed the firefighter’s sexuality through a same-sex kiss. The emotional moment brought fans and non-viewers together, while many others recalled endless waiting periods, wanting a more genuine portrayal of their cherished characters.

The actor who portrays the role, Oliver Stark, posted his heartfelt confession on his Instagram account after feeling  “humbled and overwhelmed by the positive reaction.” He did, however, make it a point to condemn all forms of homophobia.

“If you are one of the smaller group of people commenting on my posts about how this has ruined the show, I would like you to know that I truly don’t care,” the actor penned on his Instagram stories on Saturday.

He continued, “This is a show about love and inclusion. It’s featured queer relationships from the very beginning, including a beautiful Black lesbian marriage played out by two of the best actresses I’ve ever watched.”

Oliver also added, “If one other character finding a new facet to his sexuality and [realizing] his bisexuality is your deal breaker — I fear you’ve missed the entire point of the show,” he continued. “You are not required to announce your departure.”
