Shakira admits she thinks she ‘used to overdo’ her voice’s yodel
Shakira shared details about her past vocal technique and revealed that she felt she used to “overdo” her signature yodel on her older songs.
During a recent appearance on Hot Ones, the Colombian singer was asked by host Sean Evans what makes her “cringe or wince” when she hears her early career songs.
“So many things. I think I used to overdo the cries in my voice,” Shakira stated, before briefly demonstrating her iconic yodel. “I think it was exaggerated. A little baroque. You know?” “Too much Shakira,” she quipped.
The “Waka Waka” singer who just released her 12th studio album Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran in March, stated why she believes she has matured as a musician, citing her voice being more stronger over time.
“I noticed that after my pregnancies, my voice got thicker, more rounded, more full,” the Grammy-winning performer stated, alluding to her two kids with ex-partner Gerard Piqué. “Also, my choices are more mature. I have evolved as a woman, as a person, my intellect has evolved.”
Earlier in the chat, Evans specifically mentioned her previous interview with Zane Lowe for Apple Music 1, in which the singer admitted she “used to suck.”
“I feel that my voice keeps changing over the years, and I tell my [sons Milan and Sasha] that,” the singer stated at the time. “I sometimes listen to some music of mine with them. Not on purpose, but it just happens, you know, maybe some a song, some comes out on the playlist or on the radio or whatever.”
Shakira added, “I say, ‘I used to suck. But, I think I’ve evolved.’ I like myself much better now as an artist, but that’s only me.”
