Sandra Bullock was embarrassed by Speed 2
Sandra Bullock has always been cautious about returning to the world of sequels, and for good reason—she’s still haunted by the memory of Speed 2: Cruise Control, which she starred in over 25 years ago. The film, which swapped the high-speed thrills of a bus chase for the slow-motion suspense of a cruise ship, was a critical and commercial disaster. Keanu Reeves wisely chose not to return for this sequel, and Bullock has been vocal about her regret ever since.
In fact, Bullock even imposed a “no sequels” rule on herself for a time, and with good reason—Speed 2 remains a sore spot. Speaking to Too Fab, she admitted, “I have one… that I’m still embarrassed I was in. It’s called Speed 2. I’ve been very vocal about it. Makes no sense. Slow boat. Slowly going towards an island. That’s one I wished I hadn’t done.”
Bullock has only done one sequel since that time, the 2005 flop Miss Congeniality 2: Armed and Fabulous, which has a dismal 16% on Rotten Tomatoes. Unsurprisingly, it hasn’t made her want to dive into more sequels.
During an interview with Too Fab, actor Daniel Radcliffe tried to soften the blow by pointing out that Speed 2 had developed a cult following. Bullock, however, wasn’t convinced, joking, “Very quiet. Like five people. Him and the other four 12-year-olds who were watching the slow boat going towards the tiny island.”
While Radcliffe has had success with his Harry Potter franchise and other sequels, Bullock lamented, “Every one of (the sequels I’ve done) has been an absolute stinker.” She even poked fun at her own track record, adding, “My career started on sequels. They’re all brilliant. Mine are all stinkers.”
Given her iconic roles in films like The Blind Side and Gravity, it’s no wonder Bullock has moved away from sequels—she’s focused on taking on more diverse, critically acclaimed projects that have kept her at the top of her game for decades.
