Nicole Kidman, a star who’s worked with some of the biggest names in filmmaking, has one more director on her wish list: Martin Scorsese. However, her dream of working with the legendary filmmaker comes with a specific condition — she wants to be part of a film that centers on women. Scorsese’s filmography, which often explores male-dominated worlds like those in Goodfellas and Taxi Driver, has been criticized for lacking substantial female roles. Kidman’s comment reflects this, as she acknowledges that Scorsese’s films usually feature male leads in male-centric environments, which hasn’t left much room for her in the past.
Despite this, Scorsese has occasionally given women prominent roles in his films. Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore (1974) featured Ellen Burstyn in a lead role, earning her an Oscar nomination, while Killers of the Flower Moon (2023) gave Lily Gladstone a powerful performance opposite Leonardo DiCaprio, which led to critical acclaim and a Golden Globe win. Margot Robbie’s breakout role in The Wolf of Wall Street also showed Scorsese’s ability to bring depth to female characters, even in films that are largely male-focused.
In the past, Scorsese has defended his choices, explaining that his films often depict male worlds, like the corporate world in The Wolf of Wall Street or the mob in Goodfellas, where women are secondary to the story. He’s argued that it’s important to remain true to the world in which the story takes place, rather than making adjustments for political correctness.
While Kidman’s desire to work with Scorsese may still hinge on whether he’s willing to create a film that focuses on women, her wish list doesn’t end there. She also expressed interest in working with directors like Kathryn Bigelow, Spike Jonze, and Paul Thomas Anderson. Most recently, she collaborated with Halina Reijn for the upcoming film Babygirl, which will be released in December.
With Scorsese’s ability to occasionally feature strong female characters, Kidman might just get the opportunity she’s hoping for — perhaps even in a role that involves her famous wigs!
