Kate Middleton snubs King Charles and holes up in Windsor amid pressures to return to public duties

Kate Middleton’s absence from the Diplomatic Corps Reception at Buckingham Palace has sparked speculation, as it was the first time in a decade that she missed this key royal event. The reception, attended by Prince William, King Charles III, and Queen Camilla, is an important diplomatic occasion where the royal family greets hundreds of international dignitaries. Kate has traditionally been a regular at the event since 2013, missing it only once in 2014 due to a visit to New York.

This year, Kate’s absence was officially explained by the Court Circular, which noted that she was attending a meeting with her ‘Early Years team’ at Windsor Castle, well outside of London. This has raised questions, with some wondering why such an important meeting couldn’t have been rescheduled to allow Kate to attend the reception, especially given her role as the future queen.

Some commentators have speculated that Kate’s absence is linked to her ongoing recovery after being declared cancer-free in September. Royal biographer Robert Jobson suggested that Kate may not yet feel physically ready to return to a full schedule of public engagements, focusing instead on regaining her strength. Royal author Robert Hardman also mentioned that Kate may be prioritizing her office work related to early childhood development, with plans to gradually increase her public engagements in the new year.

Another potential reason for her absence could be her preparations for the annual Together at Christmas concert at Westminster Abbey, an event she organizes and is deeply involved in. This year’s theme, which is inspired by her own cancer journey, could be keeping her occupied as she plans for the concert.

While some have downplayed her absence as part of her recovery, others have raised doubts, with a few even questioning whether she’s using her cancer story to avoid public events. However, the palace has been clear in managing expectations, and there seems to be no pressure on Kate to return to major events before she feels ready. Given her ongoing focus on early childhood initiatives, it seems likely that she’ll gradually re-enter the public eye, starting with more office-based engagements.
