A new trailer for A Minecraft Movie, the long-awaited live-action film based on one of the most popular video games ever, has just been released. While it’s an improvement over the previous trailer, many fans are still not convinced. The movie has been in development for years, and though the trailer looks better than before, it still leaves a lot of people skeptical.
The movie follows the story of a young girl and her friends who embark on a journey across the Overworld to stop the Ender Dragon, a fearsome creature causing destruction. The twist? The film uses live-action actors, including Jack Black, Jason Momoa, and Danielle Brooks, while CGI creatures fill the majority of the screen. This mix of real-life performances with computer-generated creatures has been one of the most criticized aspects of the film, leaving some viewers feeling that the look just doesn’t quite work.
Minecraft’s Senior Director of Original Content, Torfi Frans Olafsson, explained in an interview with IGN that this movie has been in the works for so long that many people who will see it weren’t even born when discussions first began. Olafsson added that from the start, they always envisioned the film being live-action.
While it’s not the idea of a Minecraft movie that’s turning people off, it’s the execution. The movie features real actors, but the CGI creatures still give it a strange, jarring look that’s been a major concern for many since the first trailers dropped.
Director Jared Hess addressed the mixed reactions to the first preview, noting that the film was always going to generate strong opinions given Minecraft’s massive fanbase. People have different emotional attachments to the game, which makes it hard to please everyone. However, test screenings for the movie have reportedly been much more positive than the reactions to the trailers. According to Olafsson, one test screener said, “This is nothing like the trailer, this movie is awesome,” so there’s hope that the final product may surprise viewers who were initially put off by the preview.
The filmmakers say they’re taking feedback seriously and while it’s unlikely any major changes will happen so close to the release, they’re optimistic that the feedback will help improve the movie in some way.
At the end of the day, the success of A Minecraft Movie will come down to the audience that shows up when the film hits theaters on April 4, 2025. If these trailers haven’t convinced you, it might not be the movie for you. But there’s still hope that the film will offer more than what the trailers suggest, and it could join the ranks of successful video game adaptations — or end up being a miss. We’ll just have to wait and see!
