Like the Dan Schneider of YouTube: A ‘Piper Squad’ sex abuse case settlement update

The recent settlement involving Piper Rockelle’s YouTube channel has unveiled serious allegations of sexual abuse and exploitation within the influencer industry. The civil suit, settled between Rockelle’s mother, Tiffany Smith, and 11 former members of the “Piper Squad,” reveals troubling dynamics that many may not have known existed.

The suit accused Smith of various abusive behaviors toward the minors in Rockelle’s content, including harassment, inappropriate touching, and making sexually explicit remarks. The plaintiffs claimed they were coerced into creating content involving staged crushes and other actions that were not in their best interests. Many also stated they were not compensated for their work, highlighting the exploitation that can occur in the influencer world where young creators often operate without formal payment agreements.

Among the more shocking allegations was the claim that Smith sent her daughter’s undergarments to others, justifying it with disturbing comments about older men. Such behavior, along with her self-identification as the “Pimp” or “Madam of YouTube,” paints a picture of a controlling and manipulative environment for the young creators. The lawsuit, initiated in 2021, culminated in a settlement of $1.85 million, significantly less than the initial request of $2 million per plaintiff. Despite this outcome, Smith denied any wrongdoing. The details of the settlement, including how much each plaintiff received, remain confidential.

Matt Sarelson, the attorney representing the plaintiffs, described the case as one of the most complex and high-profile of his career, underscoring the sensitivity and challenges involved in addressing such serious allegations in the influencer space.

Angela Sharbino, a mother of one of the plaintiffs, emphasized that the lawsuit aimed for accountability rather than financial gain, ensuring that similar exploitation wouldn’t happen to other children. Another accuser, identified only as “Sophia,” stated that the suit was necessary to prevent Smith from continuing her alleged abusive actions towards minors.

This case also highlights the pressing need for stronger regulations and protections within the influencer industry, particularly for young creators who may lack the legal and financial resources to navigate these challenges. Although Piper Rockelle, now 17, remains active on social media and continues creating content, questions linger regarding the future involvement of Smith and her boyfriend, Hunter Hill, in her career.
