Kathy Bates has lost 100lb and is back to her college age weight, what’s her weight loss secret?

Kathy Bates, a veteran actress with a career spanning several decades, recently made headlines for her stunning appearance at the 2024 Emmys. Wearing an exquisite Armani gown that highlighted her slimmer physique, Bates shared that she hasn’t been this slim since her college days—a significant milestone considering she has lost about 100 pounds.

In a heartfelt interview with People, Bates expressed her excitement about selecting a gown from Armani and the joy of feeling great on the red carpet. She noted that the experience of being photographed at the event was markedly different from her previous red carpet experiences, thanks in part to her recent weight loss journey.

A Turning Point: Health and Diagnosis

Bates’ decision to adopt a healthier lifestyle was catalyzed by her diagnosis of type 2 diabetes in 2017. Previously, she had a diet rich in pizza, burgers, and soda, but the diagnosis made her realize the need for change. With diabetes affecting her family—her father had severe complications leading to amputation, and her sister also suffers from the condition—Bates felt a strong impetus to take control of her health.

Understanding that type 2 diabetes could be managed through diet, exercise, and weight loss, she made a concerted effort to listen to her body. She began eating healthier, stopped when she felt full, and avoided eating after 8 p.m. This discipline led to a gradual weight loss of around 80 pounds before she introduced Ozempic, a medication she started after consulting her doctor. This helped her shed an additional 20 pounds, but she emphasizes that her transformation was primarily the result of hard work and dedication over six to seven years, dispelling rumors that she solely relied on medication for her weight loss.

Managing Health Conditions

Bates has faced numerous health challenges throughout her life, being a two-time cancer survivor. She overcame ovarian cancer in 2003 and breast cancer in 2012, which required a double mastectomy. This surgery led to her developing lymphedema—a condition that causes swelling due to lymphatic system issues. The weight loss has notably helped her manage lymphedema, eliminating the need for compression sleeves to comfortably fit into her clothes.

Her newfound energy and health have positively impacted her work on her latest show, Matlock. At 76, Bates expressed her joy at being able to stand, walk, and move freely on set without the limitations she previously faced. Her journey of resilience and determination serves as an inspiration to many, showcasing the power of commitment to health and well-being.
