Joy-Anna Duggar Forsyth recently shared how her brother Josh Duggar’s conviction has significantly impacted her life during an appearance on The Unplanned Podcast with her husband, Austin Forsyth. The Duggar family became well-known through their reality show that highlighted their devout lifestyle and large family, but their reputation was tarnished following Josh’s allegations of molestation and his conviction for possessing child pornography.
In May 2022, Josh received a 12.5-year prison sentence, just one year before Joy-Anna and Austin welcomed their third child, Gunner. Reflecting on this difficult time, Joy-Anna described her postpartum period after Gunner’s birth as “the darkest time of [her] life.” At just 18, she struggled with the fallout from her brother’s actions, including the painful truth that he had molested multiple girls, including some of his sisters.
The combination of her family’s turmoil and the challenges of postpartum life caused Joy-Anna to question her faith. She recalled feeling lost and asked herself, “What is even real? What do I believe?” This period was further complicated by her sisters Jill and Jinger publishing memoirs detailing their experiences as victims of Josh’s abuse, forcing Joy-Anna to confront her feelings about her family and faith.
Despite these hardships, she found that this challenging phase ultimately strengthened her spiritual beliefs. She realized that her approach to Christianity had been more about following a checklist than developing a genuine relationship with her faith. Today, Joy-Anna is dedicated to her family and raising her three children—Gideon, Evelyn, and Gunner—in a nurturing environment in Arkansas, emphasizing resilience and personal growth through her family’s struggles.
