A TV adaptation of Stephen King’s ‘Carrie’ just found it’s perfect showrunner in a popular horror connoisseur

Get ready for a fresh dose of horror as Stephen King’s Carrie is set to be reimagined as a television series, and the legendary Mike Flanagan is at the helm! Known for his work on Netflix hits like The Haunting of Hill House and Midnight Mass, Flanagan will write and executive produce this new adaptation, currently in development at Amazon MGM Studios.

The show aims to deliver “a bold and timely reimagining” of the classic story about a bullied high schooler who discovers her telekinetic powers. With eight episodes planned, the series promises to delve deeper into the lore of Carrie than previous adaptations have done. The most notable of these was Brian De Palma’s 1976 film featuring Sissy Spacek, which has become a staple of horror cinema.

Flanagan has a track record of successful collaborations with King, having adapted works like Gerald’s Game and the sequel to The Shining, Doctor Sleep. This partnership has become a hallmark in the horror genre, akin to other iconic pairings like Simon and Garfunkel or bacon and eggs.

While specific plot details are still under wraps, you can expect the familiar elements from the original story, including the infamous pig’s blood scene. King himself shared his support for the project on X (formerly Twitter), expressing enthusiasm for Flanagan’s involvement and even hinting at a potential adaptation of Salem’s Lot.

This new Carrie series joins a wave of upcoming adaptations of King’s works. Other projects in the pipeline include The Long Walk, directed by Francis Lawrence, and a film version of The Running Man by Edgar Wright, with stars like Glen Powell and Josh Brolin attached. There’s also an adaptation of King’s short story The Monkey featuring Theo James set to release next year, along with the It prequel series, Welcome to Derry.

As for casting details, nothing has been announced yet. But considering King’s recent thematic critiques of real-world figures, there are plenty of tongue-in-cheek suggestions about potential cameos that could add a satirical twist to the narrative.

Fans of horror and Stephen King alike will want to keep an eye out for more updates on this thrilling project!
