‘What We Do in the Shadows’ cast bids farewell as final season premieres in time for Halloween

FX’s beloved comedy horror mockumentary series What We Do in the Shadows has officially kicked off its sixth and final season, premiering on October 21. Since its debut in 2019, the show, inspired by the 2014 film of the same name by Jermaine Clement and Taika Waititi, has captured audiences with its quirky characters and unique take on vampire life.

The series centers on four vampire roommates—Nandor the Relentless (Kayvan Novak), Laszlo Cravensworth (Matt Berry), Nadja of Antipaxos (Natasia Demetriou), and Colin Robinson (Mark Proksch)—who navigate life in Staten Island alongside Guillermo de la Cruz (Harvey Guillén), Nandor’s familiar with a surprising lineage as a descendant of Van Helsing, and The Guide (Kristen Schaal).

In April 2024, ahead of filming for the final season, journalists visited the set in Toronto for a table read, where cast members expressed mixed emotions about wrapping up their time with these beloved characters. Demetriou noted the bittersweetness of her last read, saying, “I just love playing this character… that, to me, is why I wanted to get into acting, to be funny.” Novak echoed this sentiment, humorously reflecting on how he will fondly remember his time on the show.

At New York Comic Con, showrunner Paul Simms explained the rationale behind ending the series after its sixth season. He emphasized the importance of leaving while the show is still at its peak, rather than risking it overstaying its welcome. Despite the series conclusion, Simms reassured fans that the final season will deliver the wild antics they’ve come to love, hinting at “murder and mayhem” along with a healthy dose of office-related shenanigans.

The cast, reflecting on what they will miss most about the show, highlighted the joy of working together and bringing the kooky characters to life. Guillén praised the natural humor of the cast and crew, while Berry appreciated the creative freedom that comes with mockumentary-style filming, allowing actors to explore their characters more dynamically. Proksch also noted the thrill of improvisation and the encouragement to embrace silliness.

Season 6 picks up where the previous season left off and introduces new characters as the story unfolds. The premiere featured three episodes, with new episodes set to drop weekly, culminating in a grand finale on December 16, 2024. Fans can expect an unforgettable farewell to this one-of-a-kind series, filled with the charm and chaos that has defined What We Do in the Shadows from the very start.
