Agatha All Along: Is Wanda Maximoff dead in the MCU?

The creator of Agatha All Along recently addressed a burning question among Marvel fans: Is Wanda Maximoff, also known as the Scarlet Witch, really dead in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU)?

Since the dramatic events of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness in late 2022, many fans have speculated that Wanda met her end after being crushed by the collapsing Mount Wundagore. While this seems plausible, especially given her powerful status as a major MCU character, it’s hard for many to believe she could actually be gone for good. After all, in comic book movies, death is often just a temporary setback.

What Agatha All Along reveals

The original trailer for Agatha All Along seemed to confirm Wanda’s death, showcasing her body lying near a creek during a scene where Agatha investigates.

Jac Schaeffer, the creator of Agatha All Along, shared her thoughts on Wanda’s fate during an interview with The Wrap. She emphasized that what we see regarding Wanda’s death is presented from Agatha’s point of view. Agatha claims to have witnessed a dead body, but she doesn’t fully trust her own perceptions because she was under Wanda’s spell at the time. Schaeffer explained:

“We wrote that from Agatha’s perspective. As far as Agatha is concerned, she doesn’t actually have the answer. She saw a dead body through her witchy mind, but she knows she can’t completely trust that.”

Agatha’s uncertainty leads her to playfully toy with the situation. Schaeffer added:

“So if Agatha doesn’t have the answer, she’s going to mess with people. That’s just Agatha being Agatha.”

When pressed for a definitive answer about Wanda’s status in the broader MCU, Schaeffer sidestepped the question, mentioning that it’s not her area to discuss, but she expressed her hope for Wanda’s return:

“As for the larger MCU, yeah, that’s not my department. But I’m always rooting for Wanda Maximoff to grace us with her presence again.”

Wanda’s possible return

Despite the suggestion that Wanda is dead in the current MCU timeline, fans are eagerly anticipating her comeback. The details of how this might happen remain a mystery, but it’s a hot topic among the fanbase. Schaeffer has previously hinted at her desire for a Scarlet Witch movie, which could put Elizabeth Olsen’s character back in the spotlight.

Marketing for Agatha All Along has also hinted at Wanda’s potential return, especially after her son, Billy Maximoff, was prominently featured in the series. Many believe her comeback could play a significant role in the two-episode finale of the show, especially given her frequent mentions throughout the series. However, there’s no guarantee she will return right away.

Most fans expect her resurrection to be part of the epic event that is set to unfold in Avengers: Secret Wars in 2027, where a multitude of Marvel heroes will come together on screen. Whether her return happens sooner or later, it’s sure to spark plenty of discussions among viewers.

The first seven episodes of Agatha All Along are now available to stream on Disney+. Episodes 8 and 9 will drop on Wednesday, October 30, at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT.
