Breanna Stewart, the star of the WNBA, recently revealed that her family received threats to their safety, prompting her wife, Marta Xargay Casademont, to seek assistance from the New York Police Department.
In an interview with ESPN’s Malika Andrews, Stewart confirmed the disturbing news while discussing her pursuit of a third championship with the New York Liberty during the WNBA Finals, aiming for the franchise’s first title.
What Happened to Stewart’s Wife?
Stewart’s wife, Xargay, received an anonymous email filled with homophobic slurs and a death threat. After receiving this alarming message, she promptly reported it to the NYPD to ensure the family’s safety.
During the ESPN interview, Stewart elaborated on the incident, mentioning that it occurred after the Liberty’s Game 1 loss. She expressed concern about how some fans take things too far, stating, “Marta had gotten homophobic death threats, and a few other things have happened. We’re just making sure our team and the league are aware of the situation and are continuing to keep everybody safe.”
This threat comes on the heels of a statement released by the WNBA condemning hateful rhetoric and violence directed toward players, particularly concerning issues of racism and homophobia throughout the 2024 season. Stewart emphasized the importance of addressing such behavior, saying, “Inside this league, it’s kind of like, ‘Why is this happening?’ Because we are the most inclusive league in all of professional sports.”
She passionately noted, “There’s no place for hate, homophobia, or racism. I want to use this platform to ensure we’re pushing for a safe environment, not just in the league but around the world.”
