Chris Pine recently shared his thoughts on whether he’ll be back for The Princess Diaries 3, and he seems a bit unsure about it. He was, however, pretty excited when the sequel was officially announced.
Pine, who played Nicholas Devereaux in The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, chatted about this during an appearance on the Today show with Hoda & Jenna on October 8. When asked if he’d be working alongside Anne Hathaway again for the new film, Pine admitted that he hadn’t been involved in any discussions about the project. He’s not quite sure if he’ll be returning to the fictional kingdom of Genovia.
The hosts highlighted Pine’s past role in the series, but he humorously suggested that they should reach out to Disney or Bob Iger for the real answers. He said, “Honestly, I don’t know anything about it. I think it’s fantastic,” expressing his enthusiasm for the project nonetheless.
Anne Hathaway is confirmed to reprise her role as Mia Thermopolis in this long-awaited sequel, which comes two decades after the previous film. The new movie will be directed by Adele Lim, who is known for her work on Crazy Rich Asians and has been a longtime fan of the franchise. Lim expressed her excitement about being involved, emphasizing the importance of themes like female empowerment, joy, and mentorship, which are central to the series.
Hathaway also shared her happiness about Lim directing the third installment. Last year, many fans were eager for confirmation about the sequel, and Hathaway reassured them that good things take time.
However, it remains unclear if Julie Andrews, who played the beloved Queen Clarisse Renaldi in the first two films, will be back for the sequel. Andrews brought so much charm to her role, making fans hopeful for her return.
The Princess Diaries franchise began in 2001, inspired by the book series by Meg Cabot. The story follows Mia Thermopolis, an ordinary teenage girl from San Francisco who discovers that she is the daughter of the king of a fictional European country. Throughout the films, Mia navigates the ups and downs of being a princess while dealing with family dynamics, friendships, and her new royal responsibilities, all under the guidance of her grandmother, Queen Clarisse.
The first movie focused on Mia’s transformation from a regular girl to a princess, while the second film followed her journey as she prepared to become a queen. Fans can catch up on both The Princess Diaries and The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, as they are available for streaming on Disney+.
